The Hamster is among the best loved family pets worldwide. Within the rodent family of pets, the hamster is definitely the most popular; mainly because of its clean nature and the cuteness factor. They are also very easy to look after and a hamsters upkeep doesn’t cost much either. 

The Teddy Bear Hamster appeals to all ages from children to adults. They are especially good for children as they are easy to handle and will each your children about responsible pet ownership. On average the Teddy Bear Hamster will live for between one and three years. Their relatively short lifespan could also help teach children how to handle the loss of a pet. 

There are lots of different types of hamster and the one that is most commonly bought as a pet is the Teddy Bear Hamster. Although they are small, they are the biggest type of pet hamster. They come in lots of different colors and could be of short haired or long haired type. An adult Teddy Bear Hamster will usually only grow to between four and six inches long. It is important to know that the Teddy Bear Hamster should never share a cage. They are very territorial and if they share a cage will, most probably, hurt each other and could fight to the death. 

After the Teddy Bear Hamster, another popular hamster is the Dwarf Hamster. This little chap will only grow to between three and four inches long which is why they are named ‘Dwarf Hamsters’. The Dwarf Hamster can usually be kept with a few other Dwarf Hamsters as they are not as territorial as the Teddy Bear Hamster. 

Once you have decided to get a hamster for a pet, it is a good idea to go out and get all the things that you will need to make a comfortable, secure and inviting home for your new pet. Before you go to pick up your new hamster, make sure that everything is ready for him to come home to, it will help him to relax without too much stress. 

You can buy lots of different types of hamster cage from a traditional cage to a whole apartment block type with tunnels and ladders for him to explore. Just make sure that he has a good solid exercise wheel to keep him fit and amused.

Remember to choose carefully the place where your new hamster house will go. Whilst it may be nice to give a view of the outside world by putting his home next to the window, you could end up causing him damage if he gets overheated from the sun. 

Buying your teddy bear hamster will be relatively cheap compared to all the paraphernalia that you have bought in advance like hamster house, toys, bedding, food, water bottle etc. 

Going to a Hamster breeder is probably a better way to acquire your new pet. A good breeder will be able to advise you on the best type of hamster for your needs. Ask the breeder lots of questions; don’t forget to find out the age of the hamsters that are available. Buy a young one as it would not be a good idea to end up with a pregnant hamster by mistake. 

One of the most important aspects of owning any type of hamster is the cleanliness of the housing. Keeping the hamster’s house clean will help keep your pet healthy and it won’t take long to do. Before getting a pet hamster make sure that you find out as much as you can about them in order to provide the best conditions that you possibly can.
