They will love to see there Teddy Bear Hamster happy and with a great life! Having a hamster will be a great judge on if your child is ready for other pets as well. If you wanted to get a larger animal like a dog or cat, we are hoping this will have taught your child on how to take care of and treat an animal. No matter what, make sure your child is giving the Teddy Bear Hamster the best life it can!

If you spend much time walking around pet stores, you will likely notice that in some stores that have teddy bear hamsters in wire hamster cages and some stores that have pet hamsters in glass (aquarium-like) cages and even other stores or all stores also carry plastic teddy bear hamster cage options.

When picking which cage is best for your new teddy bear hamster, the two things I think about are what will make my new furry friend comfortable and what will make me comfortable so we can both live in harmony.

When considering which hamster cage will be best for your new pet, consider the following items as they will help guide you to picking the best cage for the hamster.

Where is the teddy bear hamster cage going to be located and what is going into the cage with the hamster?

Determining where the cage is going to be located is very important when deciding which style of cage you will be getting for your new hamster. Deciding which types of toys the new hamster will have also helps in making this decision.

Is it going to be in a room where a child, adult or both spend a lot of time and/or sleep?

If there are going to be people that reside and/or sleep in the same room as the teddy bear hamster, then the aquarium and/or solid plastic style hamster cage would probably be best because it can help damper the sounds the hamster makes. This is especially true when sleeping because hamsters are nocturnal so they are going to want to play and exercise all night and believe me, you will hear them no matter what but the glass and/or plastic of an aquarium-like cage will help keep it not so noisy and may entirely get rid of any hamster sounds.

Are there other animals in the house that could go near the teddy bear hamster cage?

If there are going to be other animals in the house too that could go and watch and/or bother the new teddy bear hamster, then again, the glass and/or plastic aquarium style seems best. This prevents any claws from birds, dogs or cats (or any other animal) from getting into the cage and harming the hamster.

Is the room where the hamster cage is going to be noisy?

If the room is going to be noisy then think for the hamster for once and again go with the glass and/or plastic aquarium style cage because as it will damper noise coming out at night, it will also damper noise during the day allowing for the hamster to sleep much better.

What types of toys will exist for the teddy bear hamster?

In addition to the wooden block that every hamster needs to have to gnaw on, think about which types of toys your hamster will have. Will the toys be homemade or will they be store bought? If you are going to buy a standalone hamster wheel, again the aquarium glass or plastic cage comes in handy. If you would prefer the hamster wheel is a part of the cage then the wire cage may work better to meet this need. They also make plastic cages that can have plastic ‘tubing’ and hamster wheels attached. The tubing is to make fun tunnels for the teddy bear hamsters to crawl through. IF going this route, make sure the tubing is big enough for the hamster to fit through – has an area for the hamster to TURN AROUND – and come back. I am pretty sure hamsters do not like having to walk backwards.

Final Cage Consideration

A final requirement for cages is to make sure the doors and or tops of the cages are SECURE. When dealing with the glass aquarium style cage, often times the tops are just like a tightly wound screen so you have to put weights (I used rocks) to prevent the hamster from creating a situation which would allow for him or her to push up on the top (from the inside) and get out. Most plastic and wire cages have really good security systems in place that hamsters generally cannot figure out.

Whichever cage style you end up getting for your new teddy bear hamster, remember most importantly that as long as the hamster has a cage which keeps him or her inside of it safely and provides food, water, a wood chew toy and some other toys, then your new teddy bear hamster is going to always be happy.

There are just five types of hamster that would be commonly kept as pets even though there are lots more types that live in the wild. There are several differences between the hamsters that would make them unique but there are also things that would apply to all, whatever the type.

The main similarity is their lifespan which is around one thousand days or, to put it another way – nearly three years. It is usual for the male to outlive the female. All types of hamster have scent glands, but the location of the glands will depend on the hamster type.

Everyone knows that hamsters have pouches in their cheeks where they carry and store food. But did you know that the hamster would use their pouch to carry their young in case of danger.

The breeding age for the Teddy Bear Hamster is around six to eight weeks with a pregnancy of only fifteen days duration. The litter size will be around six or eight pups. It is common knowledge that hamsters are very easily stressed and the new mother is even more likely to suffer from stress. This could cause this new mother to eat the new born babies. So, if you are breeding from your Teddy Bear Hamster female, it is important that you do not allow her to get stressed.

The Teddy Bear Hamster is the common name for the pet breed of hamster, the Syrian hamster. It is also known as the golden hamster or the fancy hamster.

The Teddy Bear Hamster, when fully grown, will be around seven inches long. The female will usually be longer than a male.

When you are looking in the pet stores at the Teddy Bear Hamsters, it is usual to find quite a few young ones caged together. Teddy Bear Hamsters are extremely territorial and will protect their territory by fighting the intruder – usually to the death. However, they will not develop the territorial instinct until they are around six weeks old. When they reach that age, they should be housed in one cage each to avoid this conflict.

A very well-known breeder of hamsters, Tammy Crum told this story:

“When a former partner of mine was using a tiered arrangement for storing the hamsters, the teddy bear was on the top tier. As they were stored in a fish tank, they escaped over the side landing in another tank with Roborovskis. Sadly, by the time my former partner found the Teddy Bear Hamsters, every one of the Roborovskis had been killed.”

As the teddy bear is a large hamster, they are less quick to tire when being held than the smaller dwarf hamster. The Teddy Bear Hamster, although they are often called the golden hamster, come in over forty different shades. This has evolved through selective breeding which allows for breeding hamsters with different length of fur as well as in different colors.

Most of the breeds of hamster will not usually require any grooming at all except of course, for the long haired Teddy Bear Hamster. It is a simple enough task that can be achieved by using a soft toothbrush to remove any debris from the fur.

Now that you have decided to get a teddy bear hamster there are some supplies that you will need before he comes home. So, you should make sure that before you buy, you know precisely what you are going to need for your new hamster.

If you have never owned a hamster before, it is a good idea to speak to someone who can tell you what you will need to buy before your new pet arrives. You can also get some great information online.

There are lots of places that will list the essential supplies that you will need for your teddy bear hamster. Obviously, you are going to need somewhere for your teddy bear hamster to live. There are lots of designs to choose from. You could buy a cage or a specially designed hamster house.

The main priority is that your chosen hamster home is secure so he can not escape. Secondly, you will need one that is simple and easy to clean. It will need regular and frequent cleaning so something that has no nooks and crannies to harbor germs and debris is a must.

You now need to decide the type of bedding that you want to use. The best type is thought to be fiber bedding or aspen. Cedar or pine woodchips are best avoided because they are not safe to use with a hamster.

All teddy bear hamsters require some sort of entertainment. So a selection of hamster toys is a priority to help avoid boredom. A hamster wheel is a great way to provide not only some necessary exercise, but it will also provide a bit of fun for your new teddy bear hamster.

Chew toys especially made for hamsters are available at any good pet store. Your new teddy bear hamster should always have access to some wood to gnaw on to help keep his teeth from becoming overgrown. Overgrown teeth could cause big problems for your hamster which would require veterinary attention.

Next, you will need to buy food and water containers. You should choose feed dishes that are stable and will not be easily knocked over. For holding water, a bottle that attached to the cage and is easy to keep clean is a good idea.

Finally you need some food for your new hamster. Always buy a food that is specially made for hamsters. The manufacturers of the good hamster feeds will have made sure that all the nutritional requirements are met, so you know that he is getting the best that you can supply. If you have everything ready for when your new teddy bear hamster arrives, it will help to reduce the stress that he experiences as you will have everything he could possibly need.

As we all know, once we have been named (by our parent/guardian(s)) and by no choice of our own, we are stuck with the name he/she/they provides us forever!

The same rule holds true for teddy bear hamsters.

Great thought should be put into deciding what to name your new pet hamster(s). After all, the name is a name that you have to refer to the little furry animal for the rest of his life so it works best when you love the name too!

Unless you are certain what you want to name your little furry friend, the best advice is to bring home the new pet and allow him to be ‘nameless’ for a few days while you observe his/her general demeanor throughout each day. It is pretty much a guarantee that something he/she does during those first few days in his new home will trigger a fantastic name. For instance, let us assume that on day two of having your new hamster you notice he hops a lot. A resulting, cute and easy to remember name could be Hoppity, Hoppy or Hops because all of those names remind you and others that your hamster must like to hop like a bunny!

Another rather simple tactic to take on when naming a teddy bear hamster is to just be plain and have the name resemble the hamster’s color. This happened to be my tactic growing up. It is not entirely creative but it works. For instance, if your teddy bear hamster is gold in color, a perfect name is Goldie. Or maybe the hamster is peach, in which case Peaches is super!

Many people even refer to their hamsters with names of real people. It seems ironic but it also works fabulously. Glenn makes a very good hamster name, as does Bob or Greg (assuming the hamster is a boy!)!

A lot of people also take cartoon names or names of animals/characters from movies that the owner really likes and name their hamster(s) after that. Tigger, Obi-Wan-Kenobi, Pluto, and Dora are excellent names for new hamsters! In situations where you have multiple hamsters some popular choices could be Bill and Holly or Tom and Jerry

A final key piece to remember when naming your teddy bear hamster is to be mindful of the gender of the hamster. If you do not know the gender then the name can be anything but if you do know the gender, then sticking with gender specific names is way more fun. All of the names previously mentioned are mostly boy names but some could work for female too. A good female name could be Gracie, Gem or Ruby.

Just remember that no matter what you name your teddy bear hamster, as long as you love and care for him (pet often), he or she will be so thankful to have come home with you.

Every teddy bear hamster or gerbil owner knows how they love to play and explore.

These days you can buy all sorts of toys at the pet store to keep your pet rodents amused and entertained. One of the most widely used toys for the rodents is the running wheel. This will give them as much exercise as they need. However, it is nice to provide them with other types of toys to stimulate them. There are hamster toys that will encourage your hamster to climb or dig.

However, not everyone will have access to a pet store to buy these toys. It may be that the pet store is a long way from your home or even that you are not prepared to spend a lot of money on toys for your hamster. But there is no need to spend any money at all to keep your little pet amused. With a little imagination, you can easily make your own hamster toys.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

The smaller teddy bear hamsters just love the cardboard roll from an empty toilet roll. If your pet is a little on the tubby side, you may have to find a cardboard roll from the middle of the kitchen towels. Your hamster will probably burrow his way into the cardboard tube or even hide inside it. The teddy bear hamster just loves to hide and burrow!

A tissue box is another free hamster toy. Before you give it to him, you should remove any traces of the plastic that is sometimes found on a tissue box. Put the box in your hamster’s cage and enjoy the show! My hamster just loves to hide in this new toy that has appeared in his home.

For even more entertainment, you could expand this simple idea by connecting a few of these tissue boxes and cardboard tubes together to create a great adventure playground for your hamster.

Another toy that you could make for your teddy bear hamster requires a little more work. Using cardboard, you can create a hamster maze. To make this simple hamster toy you will require and empty cardboard soda flat along with some scraps of cardboard. Tear your scraps of cardboard in to long strips to make some walls in your hamster’s maze. You will then need to use some glue to stick these cardboard strips to the soda flat to construct a maze. Make it interesting and give him a way in and out. Put you teddy bear hamster at the entrance and wave him goodbye as he goes off to explore his new toy.

The home made teddy bear hamster toys that you could make are only limited by your imagination and think of all the cash that you can save whilst giving your teddy bear hamster lots of exercise and even more fun.

Every Teddy Bear Hamster needs some hamster toys to play with.

They can get bored if they are left with nothing to do. So, to keep your pet entertained as well as fit, you should get him something to play with.

The Teddy Bear Hamster needs some sort of toys that will encourage him to run, giving him the exercise that he needs. So a good hamster wheel or a hamster ball is a great addition to his home.

He would also appreciate chew toys or things to climb up or over. A good solid wood block is great for keeping his teeth filed down. If he has nothing to gnaw on, his teeth could grow long and necessitate a visit to the Vets to have them cut.

Where can you get these hamster toys for your pet? Well, if you live close enough, you could have a look and see what your local pet store has in stock that is suitable for a teddy bear hamster. However, a lot of the pet stores will cater mainly for dogs and cats and may only have a small selection of toys geared towards rodents.

A great way to find a huge selection of hamster toys is to look online. The advantage of online shopping is the range of hamster toys that you can find. You should check out some of the obvious sites such as eBay or Amazon who will always have a large selection to choose from

When buying from these sites you will be able to see photographs of the hamster toys as well as other people’s opinion of the products as there are usually reviews on the product concerned. As a rule, buying toys for your hamster will be cheaper online because, as there are no store overheads and there is a lot of competition, the vendors are able to keep the prices low to attract lots of customers.

The Hamster is among the best loved family pets worldwide. Within the rodent family of pets, the hamster is definitely the most popular; mainly because of its clean nature and the cuteness factor. They are also very easy to look after and a hamsters upkeep doesn’t cost much either.

The Teddy Bear Hamster appeals to all ages from children to adults. They are especially good for children as they are easy to handle and will each your children about responsible pet ownership. On average the Teddy Bear Hamster will live for between one and three years. Their relatively short lifespan could also help teach children how to handle the loss of a pet.

There are lots of different types of hamster and the one that is most commonly bought as a pet is the Teddy Bear Hamster. Although they are small, they are the biggest type of pet hamster. They come in lots of different colors and could be of short haired or long haired type. An adult Teddy Bear Hamster will usually only grow to between four and six inches long. It is important to know that the Teddy Bear Hamster should never share a cage. They are very territorial and if they share a cage will, most probably, hurt each other and could fight to the death.

After the Teddy Bear Hamster, another popular hamster is the Dwarf Hamster. This little chap will only grow to between three and four inches long which is why they are named ‘Dwarf Hamsters’. The Dwarf Hamster can usually be kept with a few other Dwarf Hamsters as they are not as territorial as the Teddy Bear Hamster.

Once you have decided to get a hamster for a pet, it is a good idea to go out and get all the things that you will need to make a comfortable, secure and inviting home for your new pet. Everything that you will need is available online; do a search and see what options are available to you. Before you go to pick up your new hamster, make sure that everything is ready for him to come home to, it will help him to relax without too much stress.

You can buy lots of different types of hamster cage from a traditional cage to a whole apartment block type with tunnels and ladders for him to explore. Just make sure that he has a good solid exercise wheel to keep him fit and amused.

Remember to choose carefully the place where your new hamster house will go. Whilst it may be nice to give a view of the outside world by putting his home next to the window, you could end up causing him damage if he gets overheated from the sun.

Buying your teddy bear hamster will be relatively cheap compared to all the paraphernalia that you have bought in advance like hamster house, toys, bedding, food, water bottle etc.

Going to a Hamster breeder is probably a better way to acquire your new pet. A good breeder will be able to advise you on the best type of hamster for your needs. Ask the breeder lots of questions; don’t forget to find out the age of the hamsters that are available. Buy a young one as it would not be a good idea to end up with a pregnant hamster by mistake.

One of the most important aspects of owning any type of hamster is the cleanliness of the housing. Keeping the hamster’s house clean will help keep your pet healthy and it won’t take long to do. Before getting a pet hamster make sure that you find out as much as you can about them in order to provide the best conditions that you possibly can.
