If you spend much time walking around pet stores, you will likely notice that in some stores that have teddy bear hamsters in wire hamster cages and some stores that have pet hamsters in glass (aquarium-like) cages and even other stores or all stores also carry plastic teddy bear hamster cage options.
When picking which cage is best for your new teddy bear hamster, the two things I think about are what will make my new furry friend comfortable and what will make me comfortable so we can both live in harmony.
When considering which hamster cage will be best for your new pet, consider the following items as they will help guide you to picking the best cage for the hamster.
Where is the teddy bear hamster cage going to be located and what is going into the cage with the hamster?
Determining where the cage is going to be located is very important when deciding which style of cage you will be getting for your new hamster. Deciding which types of toys the new hamster will have also helps in making this decision.
Is it going to be in a room where a child, adult or both spend a lot of time and/or sleep?
If there are going to be people that reside and/or sleep in the same room as the teddy bear hamster, then the aquarium and/or solid plastic style hamster cage would probably be best because it can help damper the sounds the hamster makes. This is especially true when sleeping because hamsters are nocturnal so they are going to want to play and exercise all night and believe me, you will hear them no matter what but the glass and/or plastic of an aquarium-like cage will help keep it not so noisy and may entirely get rid of any hamster sounds.
Are there other animals in the house that could go near the teddy bear hamster cage?
If there are going to be other animals in the house too that could go and watch and/or bother the new teddy bear hamster, then again, the glass and/or plastic aquarium style seems best. This prevents any claws from birds, dogs or cats (or any other animal) from getting into the cage and harming the hamster.
Is the room where the hamster cage is going to be noisy?
If the room is going to be noisy then think for the hamster for once and again go with the glass and/or plastic aquarium style cage because as it will damper noise coming out at night, it will also damper noise during the day allowing for the hamster to sleep much better.
What types of toys will exist for the teddy bear hamster?
In addition to the wooden block that every hamster needs to have to gnaw on, think about which types of toys your hamster will have. Will the toys be homemade or will they be store bought? If you are going to buy a standalone hamster wheel, again the aquarium glass or plastic cage comes in handy. If you would prefer the hamster wheel is a part of the cage then the wire cage may work better to meet this need. They also make plastic cages that can have plastic ‘tubing’ and hamster wheels attached. The tubing is to make fun tunnels for the teddy bear hamsters to crawl through. IF going this route, make sure the tubing is big enough for the hamster to fit through – has an area for the hamster to TURN AROUND – and come back. I am pretty sure hamsters do not like having to walk backwards.
Final Cage Consideration
A final requirement for cages is to make sure the doors and or tops of the cages are SECURE. When dealing with the glass aquarium style cage, often times the tops are just like a tightly wound screen so you have to put weights (I used rocks) to prevent the hamster from creating a situation which would allow for him or her to push up on the top (from the inside) and get out. Most plastic and wire cages have really good security systems in place that hamsters generally cannot figure out.
Whichever cage style you end up getting for your new teddy bear hamster, remember most importantly that as long as the hamster has a cage which keeps him or her inside of it safely and provides food, water, a wood chew toy and some other toys, then your new teddy bear hamster is going to always be happy.
